On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
