Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
