Our Top Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Spot.

At first glance, this album could seem closer to a difficult scholarly quiz than a new popular music record from a musician who just had a last hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Divided into four separate parts and sung in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic work that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily change, frequently by way of the prism of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars skyward here, carried by the lush presence of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a long list of collaborators. The pure audacity alone renders the work of contemporary artists seem rather modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, with full credit going to the artist. Although this is not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the scale are much higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Much like the legendary Björk during her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she's tearing hearts apart, the listener still desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit comes forth brightly on the stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song then shifts into the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album is that you never exactly know—or even want to predict—where you is going next."

Almost every track concludes at a completely different place from how it began. One moment examines the transient trappings of celebrity over a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital chaos. Another, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic style begins out moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is no coincidence that it has become her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in English swells around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. That feat gets echoed on another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook character hiding a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While some major releases of the year felt like feasting on meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the guests at the table, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flit from conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
