India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution After Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Extremely High Pollution Levels
Various sections of the city recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy limit established by the WHO.
Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy limits.
Fireworks Restrictions and Current Changes
Since 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
However earlier this year, the recently formed regional government appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "tradition and public health".
Judicial Verdict and Implementation
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, the court approved the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated hours throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Many air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous levels seen during the festival in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from across the border following the festivities.
Chronic Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated city.
Various Pollution Factors
The problem in the capital is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, garbage fires and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as colder air arrives.
Medical and Financial Toll
Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous studies.
These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can result in cancer.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in the city.
