A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
